SAP-DOT PROGRAM
(see below for Return to duty process diagram)
If an employee should have a positive drug test, with a Drug Free Workplace program in place, companies have a substance abuse program that is both cost effective and a significant substance abuse intervention. The employee will be provided a comprehensive assessment to determine the extent of the substance abuse and will be offered a clear contractual obligation for intervention and structured treatment that holds the employee responsible for change.
SAP-DOT (SAP) is a person who evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and
aftercare.
As a SAP you are advocate for neither the employer nor the employee. Your function is to protect the public interest in safety by professionally evaluating the employee and recommending appropriate
education and/or treatment, follow-up tests, and aftercare.
SAPs meet the guidelines of the
Department of Transportation (DOT) regulation 49 CFR Part 40
and follow the procedures for conducting workplace drug and alcohol testing for the federally regulated Transportation Industry.
